🔎 Searching for collaboration opportunities in the Agri-Foodsector: Ecosystem-Building Workshop in Canary Islands

On the 20th of May, the Technologic Institute of the Canary Islands (ITC) hosted a regional Ecosystem-Building Workshop, with a strong focus on the agri-food sector. The event brought together key stakeholders from the Canary Islands, including participants who had also taken part in the Murcia Food 2025 Brokerage Event.

This initiative was held within the framework of the STARRISE project, which aims to strengthen regional innovation ecosystems and foster cross-border collaboration in the agri-food industry.

    The event gathered SMEs and stakeholders from the agro-food value chain in the Canary Islands to collaboratively explore current challenges, identify innovation opportunities, and co-create strategic project ideas, and specially explored interregional collaboration.

    💡About Murcia Food

    Murcia Food 2025 is a technological event in the food sector which main objective is to promote collaboration between companies, technological centers and universities to boost innovation in the food industry.

    Murcia Food 2025 consists of two main events:

    Brokerage Event

    Discover the latest creations in the field of food technology. Companies from different European countries with an excellent opportunity to hold hybrid bilateral meetings aimed at establishing a technology cooperation agreement. 

    Parallel Events

    Several conferences and presentations took place at the XII International Symposium on Food Technology, at which the latest creations in the sector were presented.

    🌍 A Good Opportunity to Create Synergies

    During this activity, the participants described in a few keywords what needs, problems or bottlenecks are facing concerning innovation, technology transfer and cooperation between Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) and businesses. The needs were about themes like marketing, financing and technology.

    ⚡ Key-Challenges:

    The needs were clustered together, giving the following the main categories:   

    Marketing

    Access to new markets, expand business. 

    Differentiation with competence. 

    Differentiation of the local product to give added value. 

    Financing

    Investment in R&D 

    Development of new products. 

    Award-winning (visibility). 

    Technology

    AI solutions. 

    Food preservation. 

    Waste management. 

    🤝 The Potential of Collaboration: Key Outcomes and Dynamics

    Participants had the opportunity to present their areas of expertise and explore how they could contribute to the development of innovative projects and the resolution of shared challenges. Key topics included the implementation of sustainability strategies, improved access to the national tourism sector and customer bases, project design and financing, and the promotion of cross-sector collaboration.

    The outcomes of the workshop were highly positive, with several promising ideas emerging from the discussions.

    Among the concepts developed were IT-based solutions for food waste management, the application of analytical techniques such as IRMs to determine the geographical origin of food products, the optimization of fertilization practices, and the assessment of climate conditions influencing crop cultivation.

    Participants also explored the potential of wine tourism as a value-added component of the agri-food value chain.
